Release notes and terms of use for the CHARON-VAX/Demonstration (v 3.1) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note that CHARON-VAX/Demonstration for Windows is a small subset of the commercial product, only intended to make you familiar with the concept. This demo version should NOT be used for evaluation of CHARON-VAX performance or functionality, for which purpose deploy a fully functioning CHARON-VAX product. This releaase of CHARON-VAX/Demonstration for Windows has a drop-dead date of 31 August 2005. It may be run for three hours without interruption after which it terminates and must be re-started. CHARON-VAX/Demonstration for Windows may run on a standard office PC or laptop with a CPU of at least 1 GHz, 256 MB memory running Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition or Windows XP Professional. To assure reliable Ethernet and disk IO under heavy load a dual CPU system is required. The following limitations apply to this kit: - The CHARON-VAX console starts using the default Windows Hyperterminal program using a parameter file OPA0.ht. - One MSCP disk controller is implemented with a fixed configuration: One disk image is pre-configured as VAXSYS.VDISK (DUA0) One disk image is pre-configured as USER.VDISK (DUA1) If present the CD ROM reader (Cdrom0) of you PC is configured as DUA3. Similarly, if present, Floppy disk A is available as DUA4. - An Ethernet controller. - This product does not provide serial line or tape support. The installation kit is supplied with a bootable disk image, and an empty user disk image. The bootable disk contains a VAX ELN system. To install CHARON-VAX/Demo, launch the installation procedure by clicking on setup.exe (should autostart if installing from a CD). The installation process takes a few moments to copy the disk images. Please be patient. The installation procedure creates a CHARON group for CHARON user accounts. It ensures adequate privileges. See below for instructions on how to install the CHARON network driver, required if you wish the emulated VAX to join a network. CHARON-VAX/Demo includes a simple Graphical User Interface allowing the user to switch disk images, select an Ethernet adapter and save a series of configurations. To start the GUI open CHARON-VAX/Demo from Start | CHARON-VAX menu. Choose disk images and launch the emulated VAX with the START button. You will see the system startup countdown, ending with the console prompt >>>. Type B DUA0 to boot from DUA0. After a while type to get the Username prompt. Login as CHARON-VAX no password. Use your floppy drive A: to copy in simple applications. The emulated VAX will now run for 3 hours before terminating. At any time you may terminate the VAX emulation by pressing STOP. Remember to shut down the VAX operating system correctly before exiting the emulated VAX. In case of problems, a log file including warnings and errors is available via the Configuration menu. After installing CHARON-VAX/Demo enable the Networking facilities of CHARON-VAX by installing the CHARON network driver as follows: Open the ‘Network Connections’ applet from the Start | Settings menu. Select the Local Area Connection to be used with CHARON-VAX, click the right mouse button and open the ‘Property’ applet. Switch to the ‘General’ panel and check the list of the installed protocols. If you have previous versions of the Charon’s packet protocol drivers, uninstall these first. To do so, select the protocol driver, click uninstall and follow the Windows questions. Don’t forget to reboot the system when complete. If you do not have a previous NDIS5 driver installed, click the ‘Install’ button, select ‘Protocol’ from the list of the ‘Network Components’ and click the ‘Add…’ button. In the ‘Select Network Protocol’ applet, click the ‘Have Disk’ button. In the ‘Install from Disk’ applet select the driver directory in the CHARON–VAX installation folder. The Applet should automatically pick up the sripacket.inf file with the driver information. Click ‘Ok’ to install the driver. Don’t forget to reboot the system after driver installation. After system reboot, come back to the ‘Network and Dialup connections’ applet and check that ‘Charon’s Packet Protocol (NDIS5)’ is present and enabled in the list of the installed components on the selected Network adapter. Disable all other components to ensure optimal CHARON-VAX access to this network card. You are not permitted to operate this software beyond its expiration date, run it on backdated systems, reverse engineer or otherwise modify its expiration date or any other component, sell it or use it for educational or commercial purposes.
