INGRES stands for INteractive Graphics REtrieval System and is a modern data base management system. INGRES is a "relational" system, which means that information is stored in tables of related data. This is a very flexible system and is easy for the unsophisticated operator to use. INGRES supplies default tables and reports for data entered, so that information can be handled almost at once. INGRES also sup- plies the tools for the creation of sophisticated data entry screens and reports. How this is done is explained in the docu- mentation which accompanies this release. This release letter describes the technical features of the XE550 INGRES Database Management System. A copy of this release letter can be found in the directory on [D1] labeled: Releasenotes.XE550.INS. If you already have an older version of INGRES on your system, please read Section 6.1, Limitation #2, BEFORE proceeding to the installation procedure outlined in Section 4.0. Please read this entire release letter before proceeding to the installation procedures outlined in Section 4.0. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 4 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 2.0 DOCUMENTATION The following is a list of all documents available for the XE550 INGRES Database Management System: - XE550 INGRES Installation & Operations Guide (Doc # 1175940) - XE550 Systems, INGRES Self-Instruction Guide (Doc # 1176443) - XE550 Systems, Introduction to INGRES (Doc # 1176435) - XE550 Systems, INGRES Reference Manual (Doc # 1175967) - XE550 Systems, EQUEL/C User's Guide (Doc # 1175965) - XE550 Systems, INGRES QBF (Query by Forms) User's Guide (Doc # 1175973) - XE550 Systems, VIFRED (Visual FoRms EDitor) User's Guide (Doc # 1175981) - XE550 Systems, INGRES RBF (Report by Forms) User's Guide (Doc # 1176005) - XE550 Systems, INGRES Report Writer Reference Manual (Doc # 1175999) - XE550 Systems, INGRES Application Notes (Doc # 1176468) - XE550 Systems, INGRES Demonstration (Doc # 1176450) Some purchasers of INGRES may receive preliminary copies of some, or all, of these manuals. Those getting preliminary versions will get completed manuals at a later date. Should the finished manuals fail to arrive within a reasonable amount of time, contact your local Burroughs support person and have him/her follow up on this for you. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 5 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 3.0 SOFTWARE FEATURES XE550 INGRES is released with the following features, described in detail in the associated INGRES documentation: - Terminal Monitor: creates a workspace in which QUEL (query language) commands can be entered, edited, and executed. - Query by Forms (QBF): allows retrieval, update, and insertion of information in tables. - Report by Forms (RBF): supplies default reports and then permits these reports to be used "as is" or extensively edited. - Report Writer: allows additional flexibility in report prepara- tion, including mathematical calculations and sorting. - Visual Forms Editor (VIFRED): used to enhance the forms used for data entry and retrieval. - EQUEL/C Preprocessor: allows INGRES features to be embedded in C programs. - An INGRES demonstration package: shows many of the commands availa- able and the results of their use. The 2.0.4 version of INGRES is released with a simplified user interface, called Keyway, which uses CENTIX centreCAP to switch more easily between the various INGRES functions. It is entirely function-key driven, and can be invoked from the shell by typing "INGRES". By pressing HELP at each level, you can get more information on how to proceed. The INGRES front-end programs that are accessible from Keyway are: - Database utilities: createdb, destroydb, catalogdb - Table utility: helpr - Terminal Monitor - QBF, with or withour a VIFRED form - VIFRED - ABF (if you have purchased it) - Report utilities: RBF, SREPORT, REPORT - EQUEL source file editing, compilation, and run. Access to the CENTIX shell is also provided. In addition, Keyway provides the capability to store various shell-level paramaters (such as report names, source file names, command-line flags) for continual reuse without requiring the parameters to be re-entered. For additional information on Keyway, please reference the 'INGRES Refernce Manual', Section 6. The CENTIX B3.00 centreCAP package should accompany INGRES when it is shipped to you. If you fail to receive it, contact your local Burroughs representative for assistance. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 6 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 3.1 SOFTWARE ENHANCEMENTS SINCE THE 1.01 RELEASE 1.) Memory allocation is now more efficient. There is less over- head when allocating small blocks and coalescing strategy is improved. 2.) Reduction of static data space by approximately 30%. 3.) Improved performance on long queries through incorporation of 3.0 scanner. 4.) Keyway Interface as described in Section 3.0. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 7 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 4.0 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE INGRES is installed in two stages. In the first stage of the installation, the System Load utility will copy the INGRES partitions to [d1]INGRES1 and [d1]INGRES2 and append entries to [sys]CENTIXProducts, naming the partitions which contain the INGRES software. (Please refer to the 'System Load Utility' release letter for information regarding the first stage of installation.) In the second stage, INGRES is installed into the CENTIX file system utilizing the System Administrator Facility (centrEASE). The following steps should be executed in order to complete this second stage: 1. Initiate centrEASE. (Type 'saf'.) 2. Type a '2', to 'Manage CENTIX File Systems'. 3. Type a '3', to 'Create a File System'. 4. To avoid overloading the root file system, you will need to dedicate an entire Atasi disk or specify a SMD disk as the destination for the INGRES file system. In order to do this, answer the centrEASE prompts with the information outlined below: - device type (fp, dp) Answer: fp for Atasi; Dp for SMD. - disk number Specify the number of the disk where INGRES will reside. - size of file system Specify the file system size.** - inodes Use the default. - file system name Specify a name other than INGRES. (( Example: /db. ** NOTE: By running an 'MVolumeStatus' through 'ofcli', you can find out the number of free pages available on the disk where you want INGRES to reside and use this number as the file system size. This will assure that INGRES will be placed in as large a partition as possible. 5. On the next screen, to automatically check and mount the file system at boot time, enter '1 (YES), press return, enter '1' (YES), and press go. 6. Follow remaining screen instructions (press go twice) to actually create the CENTIX file system. Once the file system has been successfully created, press next. 7. When the screen 'Manage File Systems' reappears, type a '7' (RETURN), and then press go. 8. Type a '1' (Manage User Accounts). Press go. 9. Type a '1' (Add User). Press go. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 8 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 4.0 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (CONT) 10. To create user 'ingres' on this screen, enter: 1) 'ingres', and press return. 2) and press return. (An example would be 'ingres admin account'.) 3) '/bin/sh' for the Bourne shell. Press go upon completion. 11. On the next screen, enter the number from the list shown on the screen of the file system you created in step 3, and press go. At this point, a user 'ingres' will have been created two levels deep. For example, if your file system name was called '/db' (from step 3 above), all INGRES files will be placed under the CENTIX directory '/db/ingres'. 12. Now enter the number from the list shown of the CENTIX group name to which user 'ingres' will be added. (You can use group 'other' if you have no preference.) Then, press go twice to execute the function, and press next when it is complete. 13. After the function has executed and the 'Manage User Accounts' screen is displayed, type a '10' (RETURN), and press go. 14. Type a '5', 'Install CENTIX Products', and select the appropriate number(s) to install the INGRES product. At this point, exit from centrEASE if desired by entering the number which corresponds to "EXIT" and press 'GO'. Please note that the entire procedure above should take about fifteen minutes to complete. After step 14 has completed, INGRES will be installed automatically. It is then the responsibility of the installation person to create the database database (dbdb) in order to make INGRES operable. (See XE550 INGRES Installation and Operations Guide, starting with the chapter 'Creating the Database Database.') Potential users must also be given access to INGRES through the accessdb command and the system "passwd" file. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 9 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 4.0 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE (CONT) It is possible that the 'Install CENTIX Products' step will fail if the directions shown above are not followed explicitly. An appro- priate message will be displayed, and an exit status will be shown. A successful installation is indicated by exit status of 0, while all installation errors are indicated by an exit status of 2. The two most common errors in the install step are: - "INGRESinstall: you must install INGRES Phase 1 files before Phase 2 files" REMEDY: Reload INGRES cartridge 1, then reload INGRES cartridge 2. (If your software was distributed on tape, reload the tape containing the INGRES software.) Boot the system, initiate centrEASE, and run the 'Install CENTIX products' step again (step 13). - "INGRESinstall: can't find user 'ingres' on this system" REMEDY: Be sure you have created the file system and added user 'ingres' as specified in the steps above before you 'Install CENTIX Products'. Other errors in the install step should not occur while using centrEASE, but only through a manual install. For a list of the files contained with the release, see Section 9.0. NOTE: If the system on which you are going to run INGRES contains more than one AP, please read Section 6.0 - RECOMMENDATIONS. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 10 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 5.0 DEMONSTRATION The INGRES demonstration package is intended to show the capabilities of the product. We have also found it a helpful reference on the cor- rect syntax of specific commands. The package is discussed in detail in the INGRES Demonstration Manual, form 1176450. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 11 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS Customers running the INS product who have more than one AP on their system, may have problems running INGRES on certain terminals. This is because INGRES will only run on the first AP in the system, known as AP00. A PT or dumb terminal that is attached to the second or third AP will come up with an error when trying to run INGRES. There are two solutions to this problem. The first is to purchase the INGRES Multiple-AP product (INM). If that is not feasible, then you can try to ensure that the terminals you want to be able to access INGRES are attached to AP00. This involves: - changing BTOS system files - changing CENTIX system files - rebooting the system It is STRONGLY suggested that you approach these steps with great care, because you could wind up with a system that simply will NOT boot if the system files are modified incorrectly. The easiest way to ensure that users are logged onto AP00 is to dedicate all terminals on a particular CP to AP00 (e.g. CP00). If you do not have multiple CPs, then you will not be able to ensure that a PT will always be attached to AP00. For our purposes, then, we will assume all ter- minals on CP00 will be assigned to AP00. The specific example described below assumes a 1 to 1 correspondence of APs to CPs, but this is not re- quired. The necessary system file configuration can be obtained either by using centrEASE or by modifying the system files yourself. If your site uses centrEASE, you must choose the function 'Install a Terminal' under the main menu option 'Reconfigure the System'. You must execute this func- tion once for every terminal you wish to install. Specifically, you would assign all terminals on CP00 to AP00, and CP01 to AP01, etc., as the example below depicts. Please see Section 2 of the 'System Adminis- trator's Guide', Volume 2, for more details about this function. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 12 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS (CONT) If you choose to edit the files yourself, you must match the BTOS [sys] CPxx.cnf files with the CENTIX /etc/inittabxx and /etc/conrcxx files as follows: Example: CP00.cnf /etc/inittab00 /etc/conrc00 Meaning -------- -------------- ------------ ------- Async 3 tty000 (off) Serial Printer PT 16 tty001 (respawn) **Console... PT entries . tty001 . . . tty016 (respawn) PT entries CP01.cnf /etc/inittab01 /etc/conrc01 Meaning -------- -------------- ------------ ------- Async 3 tty017 (off) Not used PT 16 tty018 (respawn) **Console... PT entries . tty018 . . . tty033 (respawn) PT entries **NOTE: If you have made a dumb ASCII terminal the system console, then the console entry in the /etc/conrcxx files will be different than shown. This will not affect INGRES. Physically connect the PTs you wish to run on AP00 (INGRES) to the first CP (CP00). Given the configuration files above, and assuming the system is rebooted, then the PTs connected to CP00 will all be able to run INGRES. The PTs connected to CP01 will not be able to run INGRES. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 13 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 6.1 LIMITATIONS XE550 INGRES has four major limitations in this release. They are as follows: 1. This release of Single-AP INGRES is only compatible with CENTIX level B3.00 system software. Systems running an earlier release of CENTIX software must upgrade prior to installing this release of Single-AP INGRES. 2. If y((our system already has a copy of an older INGRES release, the install procedure will fail. It is the responsibility of the system administrator to: - back up all user databases (using the "unloaddb" command). - remove the old INGRES file system. These steps must be done before installing this release of INGRES. After executing the above steps, do the following: a.) Install the new release. b.) Create the "dbdb" database using the instructions in the 'Installation and Operations Guide'. c.) Create the old databases and reload them. d.) Restore the databases using the "restoredb" command. 3. XE550 INGRES will only run on the first AP in the system (referred to as AP00). Any attempt to run any INGRES program in some other AP will fail. Therefore, be sure your terminal is attached to AP00 if you plan to run INGRES. (To be sure, type 'apnum'. If '00' appears, you may run INGRES.) Please refer to Section 6.0 for additional information. 4. As mentioned in the EQUEL/C manual, page 3-3, EQUEL/C reserves all names beginning with the characters "II" for internal use, and also the following names: EXaddhan, EXdeclar, EXdelete, EXenable, EXenmath, EXgetfp, EXsignal, and EXvalid. You are cautioned that the use of any such symbols may result in run-time errors or abnormal program termination. The use of names beginning with "CII" is permitted. The Burroughs INGRES 2.0.4 release is functionally equivalent to RTI's 2.0 release of INGRES running on VAXes* and other machines. The terminal monitor, invoked by typing 'ingres ', displays release level 2.0/23BH.27. This is an internal release level to RTI and should be ignored. Other INGRES front-end programs do not display a release level. * VAX is a trademark of Digital Equipment Corporation. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 14 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 7.0 FCF REPORTING PROCEDURE All software problems, software deficiencies, or suggestions for im- provements should be reported by submitting a "Field Communication Form 3027057" (FCF), to your local Burroughs Support Personnel. The FCF should be reviewed for completeness and forwarded to the following address: Burroughs Corporation Product Assurance and Support PO Box 235 Downingtown, PA 19335 Attn: FCF Coordinator All information which would be helpful in understanding and analyzing the reported situation should be included with the FCF. This can be in the form of descriptions, computer listings, media containing pro- grams and data, etc. Please include a listing of the file '[sys] Sys.Version' with ALL FCFs submitted. Certain problem situations are given below, together with appropriate information to be submitted for each. For problems which reoccur but cannot be reproduced on demand: ... a clear and detailed description of the situation. ... logfile (where applicable). ... any data which may be available for this type of problem, including listing, etc. When completing the FCF, please keep the following points in mind: ... Only one problem should be reported per FCF. ... the FCF form is to be used for reporting system software problems, errors in documentation, or sug- gestions for new software features. Do not use it to ask questions or request information from Product Assurance and Support. ... The information should be as clear and legible as possible. ... All attachments submitted with the FCF should be clearly marked with the FCF number. If you wish anything to be returned to you, including any media you may have submitted, you MUST indicate so on the FCF form, and the piece of media. If you do not, your media will not be returned. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 16 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 8.0 KNOWN PROBLEMS o Tables which are larger than one screen do not scroll properly when accessed through QBF. o SReport changes capitals to lower case letters for report names specified in the ".name" command. o In the INGRES Reference Manual, page 2-34, the "retrieve into" default storage structure should be "cheap" and not "cheapsort". Therefore, a "retrieve into" command does NOT remove duplicates. o The EQUEL/C error handling routine, IIseterr(), does not work as shown in the EQUEL/C manual. When using the error procedure "errproc" as shown in Example 3-1, page 3-3, the errnum variable MUST be an integer pointer, not just an integer. Therefore, always use "*errnum" and not "errnum" as shown. If this change is made, error-handling will work correctly. Also, please note the following change for Appendix C, page C-9: Example: errproc(errnum) int *errnum; { ingerr=1; return(*errnum); } o The "sreport" command MUST be invoked with a filename containing a dot (.) character. If a filename does not contain a dot, "sreport" appends the extension ".rw" to the filename. o Invoking the "sreport" command with a non-existent file does not produce an error message. The user is simply returned to the CENTIX shell. o The "createdb" command may take three or four minutes to execute for users other than "ingres". Please wait for it to complete, and do NOT hit "delete", or else the database will not be accessible and will have to be destroyed. 8.1 PROBLEMS FIXED SINCE THE 1.01 RELEASE o A series of ## CLEAR FIELD statements will not produce a "Line too long" error in the pre-processor. o Error messages with error numbers less than 2000 will be output properly to the screen. o OPTIMIZEDB will now correctly evaluate the minimum value for an i1 field. o Views created by the report writer while running a report are now properly cleaned up and destroyed after the report is run. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 17 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 8.1 PROBLEMS FIXED SINCE THE 1.01 RELEASE (CONT) o Correct error messages are now given if ING_GBF_DEVICE is not de- fined. o An error is now given when a user tries to edit a report that is wider than 80 columns on a screen that is defined for 80 columns. o Restoredb does not give a SYSERR if the "users" file is corrupted. o It is now possible to change the formfeed option in RBF from 'y' to 'n'. o An error message is now given if +j is specified and the journal files are missing. o Negative numbers in i1 variables now work correctly. o Views that use the date interval function will now be handled cor- rectly by UNLOADDB and COPYDB. o A value of -1 is now saved if entered in Lines to skip on break option of Columns Option Form. o An interrupt during the 'report command' during the 'defining data table...' no longer leaves the temporary view, 'rrrrNNNNN' in the database. o Purgedb will no longer remove system catalogs even if the system catalogs have been removed from the "relation" relation. o In VIFRED, users cannot use the string matching character * in the validation check statement for numeric fields. o Validation check against stored f4 values now work correctly in QBF. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 18 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 8.1 PROBLEMS FIXED SINCE THE 1.01 RELEASE (CONT) o The prompt message output, when the user selects the TABLE option in QBF, has been made clearer. o The help message that is output when the user commits a syntax error, when starting up QBF, shows all the command flags. o INGRES username is used in all RBF catalogs. o RBF no longer outputs spurious error messages. o RBF cleans up properly when a user changes the Heading or Trim. o The help message for the Move Column Heading option in RBF has been made clearer. o INGRES will now invoke the shell set up by the user using the ING_SH((ELL environment variable. o The help message that is output when the user commits a syntax error, when using the ACCESSDB or CATALOGDB command, has been made clearer. o User permissions are now output in decimal instead of octal. o When / is used, ING_TEMP is used to find the directory name where the temporary query buffer is to be stored. o Secondary indices are now properly updated when row-identifiers (tids) change in the base table. o The setuid program will not reference inginstall if unique machine id checking isn't used. o Optimizedb -zx now correctly yields minimum values on machines which support unsigned characters. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 19 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 8.1 PROBLEMS FIXED SINCE THE 1.01 RELEASE (CONT) o Repeat appends on tables with integrity constraints now work. o Repeat appends to non-existent table will no longer cause an error message to loop infinitely. o An attempt to print a view based on a base table which has been modified, i.e. a column has been deleted, now results in an error message "Column no longer in relation" being printed rather than a SYSERR. o Createdb now creates the file symbol.tbl with the correct permissions. o EQUEL no longer gives a bus error when a combined input pathname and file are greater than 48 characters. o Sreport now exits correctly after successfully executing, and no longer returns a non-zero exit status. o QBF now exits with the correct status, zero, when successful. o Updates on journaled relations with secondary indexes now work correctly. o DESTROYDB now removes a database from the dbdb even if the data- base directory does not exist. o It is now possible to do multiple sums unique. o The save function now saves dates correctly rather than being 1 hour off. o The error message returned when symbol.tbl is not readable is now "Unable to open symbol table." o Sreport now creates a file of report specifications in /tmp rather than in the user's current directory. o An arithmetic exception will no longer be returned when optimizedb is followed by a "sort by" clause in the query. o Compiled forms in EQUEL programs now work. XE550 BURROUGHS SINGLE-AP INGRES PAGE 20 LEVEL 2.0.4/U.S.A. - RELEASE TECHNICAL NOTES 8.1 PROBLEMS FIXED SINCE THE 1.01 RELEASE (CONT) o EQUEL forms programs no longer generate an access violation when getform, putform or initialize statements are used. o INGRES executables will now be found even if there is a blank line in /etc/passwd. o An error message, rather than a SYSERR, is now printed when an attempt to use a view which has been invalidated by changes to the base table is made. o A multi-variable query attempting to match on a range of values will now use a secondary index, if one exists. o A better error message is now printed if an INGRES process is unable to open an error file. o I1 format is now handled correctly in EQUEL/C on all machines. o Vifred exit is now changed so the status is 0 for a normal exit and 1 for an error exit. o Accessdb no longer creates the user file with world read permis- sion. o Vifred forms are now compiled correctly so that an ABF application can access those forms.
