INTRODUCTION The B/4 WHISPER model # is 4213; Sorbus model numbers are 4311 (120 CPS) & 4313 (160 CPS). This printer replaces the B/4 TRITEL model # 4203; Sorbus Models 4246 (80.CPS) and 4248 (120 CPS) printers. The Model 4213 printer is essentially the same as the Model 4203 printer with the following differences: A. Operator Control Panels (and cables) are not interchangeable between models: Use Control Panel 902918-002, MM363010 in the Model 4203 Printer and 903352-001, MM362060 in the new Model 4213 Printer. EFFECTIVITY: Printers shipped prior to March 1, l982. SOLUTION: Remove one of the set screws on the horizontal motor pulley. Verify that the set screw contains a nylon insert within the threads which prevents its coming loose during normal operation. If the set screw does not contain this locking insert, replace both set screws with the following part: NACS P/N BASIC FOUR P/N DESCRIPTION YY009295 P/N 207001-012 Set Screw 6-32 x .25 PROBLEM: Compressed print on the left side of the page can be caused by the print carriage drive cable binding on the horizontal motor pulley. EFFECTIVITY: Printers shipped prior to August 1, l981. SOLUTION: Adjust the pulley so that it is 1/8 inch (3 millimeters) away from the horizontal motor. Pulleys set closer or further away will strain the motor causing print problems. (This check should be made any time a horizontal motor is replaced.) Following the pulley check and adjustment ensure that the cable is perpendicular to the pulley when the print carriage is within 2 inches of the pulley. If necessary, loosen the cable clamp on the print carriage and position the cable to achieve a right angle between the cable and the motor shaft. Normally the cable should be in the middle notch of the clamp on the right side of the print carriage and in the front notch (toward the operator) on the left side of the clamp. ORIGINATOR: H. There appears to be two styles of cover: (1) The top cover is lined with foam. (2) The top cover is lined with a metallic foil tape, that gives no resistance as the paper travels thru the printer. FIX: To fix the problem of the forms jamming, on the newer style cover (with foam). The following must be done: (1) The printer must be tottaly disambled. (2) Remove foam from underneath the top cover. (3) Reline bottom of top cover, so as to prevent paper drag. It is rec- ommended to use silver foil duct tape to reline top cover. With a data scope it was observed that on a particular print statement and print line within a customer application, the printer sent back a status with an LRC error and buffer overrun error. As soon as that status was received by the system it reported an error 5 to the console running the print job. By typing RUN at the error statement the system polled the printer, the printer sent back a normal status, and the printer resumed printing. According to product support it is being worked on for a future release of O.S. (maybe 7.4E). The real problem is two fold, 1.there was nothing wrong with the data or LRC character sent to the printer, it was really busy doing line feeds and did not send a busy bit in the status as it should have (firmware bug). It had the latest firmware prom set F and the logic board was the correct LARL. Spares did same thing. 2. driver within 7.2D1 does not poll printer multiple times on a status byte from printer indicating an error condition other than busy. FIX: Workaround: configure Whisper printer with no B/4 interface, and xon/xoff . protocol, and flip switch on whisper printer to industry standard position. This board is an acceptable substitute, however it uses different PROMS that must be ordered seperately, as they are not included with the order. FIX: The following PROM sets must be used: B/4 Model 4246 (NACS 4203) 120 cps MM993603 (Set B) " 4248 ( " 4203) 160 cps MM993604 (Set D) Refer to FIB #15 for detailed information for placement locations of these PROMS. ORIGINATOR: John Tank PRINTER-TRITEL-120CPS,160CPS,80CPS------------------FIB021 Pg001 FIB 00022 04/24/89 *** Print Quality Verification *** SYMPTOM/TEXT: Due to the length of time that the Tritel(4203) and Whisper(4313) printers have been out in the field, print quality may have deteriorated to a point where checks have to be performed to insure they meet mechanical and electrical specs. Below is a summary of what to check for. For detailed information refer to Printer Service Manual M8047, and former Sorbus Tech Talk #16 dated 2/1/84. FIX: Platen Adjustment: Model 4213 -- Adjusted for .011 inch between printhead and platen with ribbon removed and forms knob fully clockwise so head is all the way foward. Model 4203 -- There is no mechanical platen adjustment as the assemblies are fixed in position. In both style printers, pulses are sent to the hammer selinoids to fire them. These pulses must be at a certain pulse width for best print quality, and are dependent on the AC input to the printer. The logic on the main circuit board.on both style printers has the ability to self adjust for slight variance of the AC input but it is necessary to be able to confirm proper pulse width due to.the fact that the new style logic board (MM362070) has a pot on it that may not be set correctly for some reason. This pot normally is factory adjusted and needs no adjusting when the board is replaced form stock. However a faulty transformer winding may not be producing a correct voltage. The following is a procedure to determine a problem: STEP 1 -- Measure +VSOL -- Bd MM361000, connector P5, pin 6. -- Bd MM362070, on end of fuse F6. *NOTE: At normal voltage, transformer tap set for 120VAC, this voltage should be +43.0 +/- 1.5V DC. STEP 2 -- If above voltage is normal, proceed with step 3. If not, you must verify transformer output by the following method: a) Remove P5 connector from Logic Board (comes from transformer) b) Measure voltage across pins 2 & 3 (orange wires) on P5 with a DVM. c) Voltage must be 56.6 to 57 percent of AC input voltage. (example) @120VAC input you should read 67.92 to 68.40 VAC. If this voltage is out of tolerance, then the xformer has to be replaced. STEP 3 -- Using an osciloscope check for positive going pulses at the following test point while running a self test ripple pattern: MM361000 -- IC 555, location 10J, pin 3 MM362070 -- PULSE Test Point, location 2A At normal room temperature (75 degrees F) and +VSOL at 43VDC, these positive pulses should be between 294 and 334 micro seconds wide. PRINTER-TRITEL-120CPS,160CPS,80CPS------------------FIB022 Pg001 *NOTE: On Bd MM361000 there is no adjustment On Bd 372070, pot R55 varies this pulse width. It is factory adjusted and normally should not be changed. STEP 4 -- When the above adjustments are in tolerance, you should have good print quality an single part paper with the forms adjustment knob at closest position.
