Tests show that these printers do not always have acceptable print quality when using six part forms. SOLUTION: The specifications for these printers have been revised as follows: Paper Thickness - Minimum paper weight is 15 lbs. Maximum multipart forms set thickness is as follows: Carbon - 5 part, 12 lb. sheets and 8 lb. carbon, maximum form thickness .016 inch. Carbonless - 5 part, 13 lb. last sheet, 14.5 lb. other sheets, maximum form set thickness .014 inch. It should be noted that this specification calls out the type of forms that will yield print quality that is fully acceptable to our standards. Those standards require that legibility on the last copy must be sufficient so that no character can be mistaken for another (lower case "e" for "o", for example). Many customers will be satisfied with print quality somewhat below these standards. Therefore, if a customer requires printing on forms which are outside of this specification, it is recommended that the forms be tested on an in-house printer, to determine whether the print quality is acceptable to the customer. ORIGINATOR: J. Rippl PRINTER-DATAPRODUCTS-B1000,B300,B600,B900-----------FIB005 Pg001 FIB 00006 11/21/86 *** 600 LPM Processor PCBA Switch 1 Setting Information *** SYMPTOM: Band won't run or won't stop. FIX: The proper setting for switch 1 on the processor PCBA is: position 1 on, all other positions off. The purpose of the switch is to set the time-out for the band drive to stop after print data stops coming from the controller. If no positions are set on, the band will not start. If more than one positions are set on the band will not time-out and idle down. A defect in this area of logic in the processor PCBA will cause the same symptoms. ORIGINATOR: H. Mitchell PRINTER-DATAPRODUCTS-B1000,B300,B600,B900-----------FIB006 Pg001 FIB 00007 07/21/89 *** Poor Print Quality on 300/600/900/1000 LPM Printers *** There have been several instances of poor print quality being reported on the Data Products band printer. The reports indicate an overall loss of print quality under constant use or poor print of the first several columns. These conditions may be the result of a worn or mis-aligned platen. It is recommended by the manufactureR, that the platen is not to be moved under any circumstances, this of course is ideal, but may not apply in all situations. The platen presently being used has a hard plastic insert which will wear under. constant use. The second possibility is that the platen had been previously moved by another service representative. Either situation will require the platen to be moved or replaced. The part number for the replacement platen is MM437167, this is a platen kit. The platen furnished in the kit, is reverseable and can be placed either way. NOTE: If it is determined that the platen should be moved, it is then required that second level support be involved. Basic guidelines for re-alignment of the platen, are as follows: 1. Remove ribbon and print band. 2. With a straight edge against platen surface, measure for a gap of .037 +/- .002 inch between the straight edge and bottom surface of drive pulley. Perform same adjustment with straight edge and idler pulley. Snug platen securing screws. ___STRAIGHT EDGE AGAINST PRINT SIDE OF PLATEN SURFACE ______ | | ___\|/________________________________________________________\|/___ .037 +/-.002 IN. | PLATEN / .037 +/-.002 IN. __________ | / ___________ /|\ -------------------------------------- /|\ | | DRIVE IDLER PULLEY PULLEY 3. Replace print band and ribbon. 4. Place printer in test mode, with all H's printing. 5. Check print density to be even at both ends of platen (columns 1 & 132), phasing at this point is not critical. Gently tapping, with soft object, at either end of platen should satisify this condition. Fully tighten platen securing screws. 6. With scope set for hammer flight time (FIB 008), check odd and even J1- pin 1 connectors (columns 1 & 2) and J17-pin 2 connectors (columns 131 & 132). It is not important that all four phases be at 1.79 ms. At this time, it is important that they are equal in pulse length. NOTE: If there is a difference of .2 ms. between the first two columns and the last two columns, then the hammer bank assembly is not parallel with the platen. A worn hammer bank latch could cause this condition. 7. Re-check step 1 - 3 to insure platen is still in tolerence. 8. Perform hammer bank flight time adj. procedures, as per FIB 008. PRINTER-DATAPRODUCTS-B1000,B300,B600,B900-----------FIB007 Pg001 9. Perform transducer phasing adj. procedures described in B/F manual 8064PA, figure 4-15. Remove the hammer bank blower assembly (without disconnecting it) by lifting it off its mounting bracket, and place it carefully on top of the auxiliary capacitor bank cover. C. Load the printer with single part paper. D. Rotate the copies control to its full counterclockwise position. E. Verify that the phase control is in its mid-range position. F. Set the test switch to the left for the fixed pattern position. G. Connect ac power plug to the ac power source. ***CAUTION*** With the hammer bank blower assembly removed, the printer must be operated at half speed, as defined in following substep "H". H. Set power switch to on and press on/off line switch (on line). Set test switch to center off position. 5. Connect oscilloscope ground to TP-A on motherboard pcba. 6. Connect oscilloscope x10 probe on odd hammer driver (A6) pin J1-1. ***NOTE*** If all waveforms are not identical in shape or the adjustment cannot be completed, troubleshoot the hammer bank circuit. 7. Adjust oscilloscope for a stable x1 waveform. 8. Adjust backstop screw for hammer #1 on the lower row for a flight time of 1.79ms. ***NOTE*** CW adjustment shortens flight time; CCW adjustment lengthens flight time. 9. Adjust oscillospe vertical centering so that top part of flight time curve touches the center line. Do not change this verticle setting until all hammers have been adjusted. 10. Set oscilloscope x10 magnifier to on and adjust horizontal centering until flight time level point is centered on the screen. Do not change this PRINTER-DATAPRODUCTS-B1000,B300,B600,B900-----------FIB008 Pg001 horizontal setting until all hammers have been adjusted. 11. Connect the oscilloscope x10 probe sequentially from pins 1-4 on each A6 connector J1 thru J17, adjusting the corresponding screw for a flight time of 1.79ms. This procedure will adjust all odd hammers. 12. Connect the oscilloscope x10 probe sequentially from pins 1-4 on each a23 connected J1 thru J17, adjusting the corresponding upper row backstop screw for a flight time of 1.79ms. This procedure will adjust all even hammers. 13. Disconnect oscilloscope and set power swich to off. 14. Reinstall hammer bank blower on its mounting bracket. 15. The strap rides or rubs on the end of the spinning pin feed shaft Check to see if the strap is loose, worn, broken, or even missing. The problem has been showing up on older printers due to wear.
