INTRODUCTION (GENERAL) The PT-4215 is a high resolution, 24-pin, matrix printer capable of operating equally well in the draft mode. Due to the PT-4215's dual-mode capability, it fills both draft and letter quality needs all in one package. Designed into the printer are many convenience features such as, an LCD STATUS/SET-UP/ERROR display, auto paper load, both serial and parallel interfaces and paper saving tear bar. 2. CONFIGURATION INFORMATION (BASIC FOUR) A) PRINTER The control panel has four membrane switches and a 16 character LCD. The switches can function in one of three modes as described below: 1) Switch Mode 1 (normal operation) ONlINE - When the printer is on-line and has data to print, the LCD will show, "ON-LINE:BUSY". When the printer is on-line and does not have data to print, the LCD will show, "ON-LINE:READY". When the printer is off-line and has data to print, the LCD will show, "===PAUSE===". When the printer is off-line and has no data to print, the LCD will show, "===OFF-LINE===". FF - Paper moves to the next top margin position. This switch functions regardless of whether the printer is ON or OFF-LINE. LF - Moves paper to the next line position if pressed and released, or to the the next top margin position if pressed and held. RESET - Causes the printer to be reset and clears any serial interface communication errors. 2) Switch Mode 2 (alternate mode) This mode is entered by holding down the RESET button and depressing PRINTER-FUJITSU-DL2400------------------------------FIB001 Pg001 either the FF or LF button. If the FF button is depressed, the printer will load paper and position it to the top margin. Repeating the sequence , with continuous forms selected, will cause the paper to retract out of the printer. If the LF switch is activated in the same fashion, the printer will enter the Micro Line Feed mode. In this mode, actuation of . the FF or LF buttons will cause the printer to move backwards or forwards, respectively, in 1/180 inch increments. This mode is exited when the ONLINE switch is pressed. 3) Switch Mode 3 (setup mode) This mode is entered by holding down the RESET button and depressing the ONLINE button. The FUNCTION is selected by depressing the FF button; the ITEM is selected by depressing the LF button; the SELECTION is done by depressing the RESET button. Setup mode is exited by depressing the ONLINE button. The configuration settings are made through the operator panel and stored in non-volatile memory. Seven general functions can be specified in . the setup mode; style, interface type, save mode, setup listing, self-test , hex dump, and defaults. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: Take the printer out of bi-directional mode and check for proper vertical alignment, if OK proceed to FIX, othewise check for mechanical binds - particularly in the belt tension arm. FIX: The printer has a saved offset to compensate for speed/mechanical differences between left and right motions, and if parts or mechanical conditions change, the offset will have to be reset. Adjust as follows: 1. Hold down the FORM FEED and LINE FEED switches while power is applied. Vertical bars will be printed continuously. These should align vertically, if not proceed to step 2. 2. Depress FORM FEED and LINE FEED switches to increment/decrement the offset and cause the bars to move into alignment. 3. Press RESET switch to exit. NOTE: This procedure is in the User's Guide M5193 page 3-3. ORIGINATOR: N. Jones PRINTER-FUJITSU-DL2400------------------------------FIB002 Pg001 FIB 00003 09/17/87 *** Data loss with printer powered off *** It is possible, under some circumstances, to lose data sent to a serial printer using Xon/Xoff protocol. This occurs by powering the printer off without taking it OFFLINE first; or by shutting down or powering down the system and then rebooting with the printer OFFLINE when there are still jobs to be printed. The result, in both cases, is that the remaining data will be sent to the OFFLINE printer and therefore, lost. This is an inherent characteristic when using Xon/Xoff protocol. There are three workarounds: 1. On the 2000/3000, configure the printer and port for DTR, if possible. ** NOTE: DTR IS NOT SUPPORTED ON MPx SYSTEMS. 2. Make sure that the printer is OFFLINE before powering it down. 3. Make sure that the printer is ONLINE before rebooting. ORIGINATOR: T. (This can also be found in operators manual #M5193) FIX: 1. Make sure power is turned off. 2. While holding down the RESET button, turn the Power switch to ON. 3. Display should indicate "INITIALIZE PCB?" 4. Press the RESET button again. 5. Display should indicate "SAVING NOW !!", then it should indicate "ON-LINE: READY" when memory has been initialized. The cause of this problem is the carriage belt (P/N MBF, 400581-136; Vendor, D8601140V192) wearing out prematurely. To fix this problem, replace the old carriage belt with a new one. New P/N - MBF, 400581-184; Vendor, D8601140V192. Notice that there is no difference between the Vendor P/N's, so there is no way to differentiate the old belt from the new belt. Stockroom supplies of this part will be purged of the old belts and will contain only the new ones. This belt removal/replacement should be performed by qualified service personnel following the instructions in the PT-4215 Service Manual (M8130), paragraph 5.7.21.1, page 5-37. NOTE: Realize that this is an aging problem and not a defect with the belt; so, even if an old belt is installed, it will still take a couple of years for the problem to show up. The problem will result in a 'OVER-FLOW ERROR' message and as a result, a loss of data. CAUSE: The reason for this problem is that the system will continue to check the status of the printer when it is taken off-line when configured as a letter quality printer. The codes sent to the printer to request the status of the printer are stored in the printers buffer when it is off-line. The buffer will eventually overflow. This condition usually takes about one hour to occur depending on how long it is left off-line and how full the buffer was prior to taking it off-line. When the buffer overflow condition occurs, the printer must be reset and any data left in the buffer is lost. WORK-AROUND: A work-around for this problem is to not take the printer off-line in the middle of the print job without stopping the job first and letting the buffer empty. Another way to avoid the problem is to not leave the printer off-line for long periods of time in the middle of a print job. FIX: There is no firmware fix for this problem. Set the timeouts for 30 to 40 seconds normally. Timeouts may be increased to allow the customer more time to take the printer off-line to adjust forms and change paper etc., but be aware that this will cause the system to initialize slower if the printer is not on-line when the system is booted. PRINTER-FUJITSU-DL2400------------------------------FIB012 Pg001 DTR protocol is the preferred method of flow control for this printer. It will give more reliable operation and works well for local and Muxed devices. Test the printer with a break out box attached to verify correct operation. You should be able to toggle DTR with the on/off-line switch. Send a sufficient amount of data to the printer to fill the buffer and observe DTR toggling to control Received Data. If the printer does not respond properly, check the interface PCBA, MM330020, to see if it contains five proms. There has been a case where an old revision level board with only four proms was found to cause a problem with DTR flow control.
