BURNT CONNECTOR P9/J9 ON POWER SUPPLY. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: CHECK FOR BURNT P9/J9 CONNECTOR ON P/S OR IF REPLACING P/S FOR ANY OTHER REASON THIS FIX SHOULD BE INSTALLED. FIX: UNPLUG P13, P14, P15 AND REMOVE POWER SUPPLY. UNPLUG P9 CONNECTOR AND TAG EACH WIRE SO THEY CAN BE REINSTALLED ON CORRESPONDING PINS. CUT WIRES NEXT TO THE CONNECTOR AND STRIP 1/2 INCH FROM THE END. TIN THE STRIPPED WIRE AND EACH J9 CONNECTOR PIN. SOLDER EACH WIRE TO CORRESPONDING PIN. INVERT P/S AND LOCATE AC POWER SW. S1. TAG EACH OF THE FOUR WIRES SO THEY CAN BE REINSTALLED ON CORRESPONDING PINS AND PULL THE LUGS FROM THE SWITCH. INSURE THE WIRE LENGTH IS SUFFICIENT AND THEN CUT WIRE NEXT TO LUG. SLIP SHRINK TUBING ON EACH WIRE IF AVAILABLE. STRIP AND TIN THE WIRES 1/2 INCH FROM THE END. CLEAN AND TIN THE SWITCH TERMINALS, ROUTE THE WIRES THROUGH THE HOLES IN THE CORRESPONDING TERMINALS AND SOLDER. IF SHRINK TUBING WAS NOT AVAILABLE WRAP EACH TERMINAL WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE. REINSTALL THE P/S AND RECONNECT P13, P14, AND P15. POWER UP THE DRIVE AND INSURE THE "DCOK" LED ON THE MAINT PANEL LIGHTS AND THE MOTOR SPINS UP. THE READY LIGHT SHOULD TURN ON WITHIN 30 SECONDS. THE MOST PREVELANT IS THE TE-315 OR NACS TYPE 5641. THIS UNIT HAS AN UNFORMATTED CAPACITY OF 315.2 MB, 6 DATA DISKS, 9.5 DATA SURFACES, 19 R/W HEADS, AND ONE SERVO HEAD. EACH OF THE FIVE HEAD/ARM ASSY'S CONTAIN FOUR R/W HEADS, TWO UP AND TWO DOWN. EACH INDIVIDUAL HEAD HAS ACCESS TO HALF OF THE DATA SURFACE OR 827 TRACKS (823 PLUS 4 CE). THE SIXTH HEAD/ARM ASSY CONTAINS A SINGLE SERVO HEAD AND IS LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM DISK SURFACE. ON MOST TE-315 UNITS THERE IS A 20TH R/W HEAD WHICH IS A SPARE AND MAY BE USED IN THE CASE OF A SINGLE HEAD FAILURE. THE PROCEDURE FOR SWITCHING TO THIS SPARE HEAD IS TO RECONFIGURE THE J30 JUMPER PLUG ON THE SERVO READ/WRITE PCB AT COORDINATE 2N. REFER TO TABLE 3-5 ON PG.3-21 IN THE TECSTOR MAINTENANCE MANUAL FOR DETAILS. THE STANDARD TECSTOR DISK DRIVE IS CONFIGURED WITH AN SMD INTERFACE AND MAY BE TESTED OFFLINE USING A CDC TB216 FIELD TEST UNIT OR A WILSON LABS SX-530 DISK EXERCISOR. SOME OF THESE DRIVES, HOWEVER, WERE CONFIGURED WITH NON-SMD INTERFACES TO RUN ON CPU'S SUCH AS HONEYWELL, WANG, ETC. THE DISK EXERCISORS NOTED ABOVE WILL NOT WORK WITH NON-SMD DISKS. THERE ARE NO EXERCISORS FOR SUCH UNITS. IN A PINCH THE DISK DRIVE'S INTERFACE BOARDS MAY BE REPLACED WITH THE SMD TYPE AND THEN TESTED WITH THE ABOVE DISK TESTERS. THE STANDARD TECSTOR CONTAINS TWO PCB'S, THE SERVO R/W, AND THE INTER- FACE AND CONTROL PCB. THESE PCB'S AND ALL OTHER OPTION PCB'S ARE INTERCHANGEABLE ACROSS THE PRODUCT LINE. THE OPTIONS ARE THE DUAL PORT PCB AND THE ADDRESS MARK PCB. ON A NON-SMD TYPE DISK THE INTERFACE AND CONTROL PCB WILL BE OF A DIFFERENT TYPE AND THERE WILL BE AN EXTRA INTERFACE PCB PIGGYBACKED ON TOP OF IT. THE MOTOR SEQUENCE SWITCH S4 ALLOWS SELECTION OF SEQUENCE PICK FROM THE CONTROLLER (REMOTE) OR THE DISK DRIVE (LOCAL). THIS UNIT ALSO HAS ERROR LOGGING CAPABILITY WHICH IS ALSO ACCESSED THROUGH THE FRONT PANEL. THE ERROR CODES ARE LISTED ON PG. 2-30 TO 2-32 IN THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL. THEY ARE READ OUT ON THE OPERATOR DISK I/O-TECSTOR-315--------------------------------FIB003 Pg001 PANEL STATUS/ERROR CODE DISPLAY BY PUSHING THE DISPLAY ERROR CODE PUSHBUTTON. IF THE RESET PUSHBUTTON IS PRESSED ALL PREVIOUS ERROR CODES ARE LOST. TO READ OUT THE ERROR CODES PUSH THE DISPLAY BUTTON 4 TIMES AND YOU WILL SEE THE FIRST ERROR CODE. IF NO ERRORS WERE LOGGED SINCE THE DRIVE WAS LAST POWERED OFF OR THE RESET BUTTON WAS LAST PUSHED THE STATUS CODE WILL REAPPEAR. IF THERE WERE ERRORS LOGGED AND YOU GET A HIT ON THE 4TH PRESS EACH SUCCESSIVE PRESS WILL GIVE YOU THE PREVIOUS ERROR UNTIL THEY ARE ALL DISPLAYED AND THE STATUS CODE IS REDISPLAYED. ERRORS ARE DISPLAYED LATEST ERROR FIRST. THE FIRST THREE PUSHES ON THE DISPLAY BUTTON WILL SHOW CYLINDER ADDRESS CODES. THE CONVERSION TABLE IS ON PG. 2-29 OF THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL. FAILURES ATTRIBUTED TO THE DISK DRIVE MAY BE GROUPED INTO FOUR CATEGORIES: 1. NOT READY/NOT SELECTED CONDITION 2. FAULT 3. SEEK ERROR 4. INCORRECT READ DATA THE FIRST THREE CATAGORIES ARE ERROR CONDITIONS DETECTED BY THE DISK DRIVE ELECTRONICS AND REPORTED TO THE CONTROLLER VIA THE INTERFACE CABLE. DURING SYSTEM OPERATION, ERROR CONDITIONS THAT RESULT IN A FAULT, SEEK ERROR OR LOSS OF READY ARE STORED IN THE DRIVE'S ERROR LOG. IF THE ERROR CONDITION IS RESET BY THE CONTROLLER SO THAT DRIVE OPERATION CONTINUES, THE ERROR LOG WILL RETAIN THE ERROR CODE PLUS STORE ANY SUBSEQUENT ERRORS DETECTED. WHEN CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE IS PERFORMED, THE ERROR LOG CAN BE READ OUT PROVIDING INFORMATION TO HELP LOCATE THE DEFECT. THE FOURTH CATEGORY, INCORRECT READ DATA, MUST BE DETECTED BY THE CONTROLLER AS THE DISK DRIVE DOES NOT PERFORM ANY CHECKS ON THE ACCURACY OF READ DATA. THE "FAILURE ISOLATION" SECTION OF THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL, PG.2-28, GIVES A LIST OF TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS FOR EACH OF THE FOUR CATAGORIES. DON'T FORGET TO CHECK POWER SUPPLY VOLTAGES (INCLUDING AC RIPPLE), BELTS, GROUNDING BRUSH, LOOSE CONNECTORS, DAMAGED INTERFACE CABLES, FACILITY POWER, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST WATCH OUT FOR DISK DRIVE GREMLINS.
