The ground bus on the rear of the unit (input sockets) are commoned with the AC line cord's ground. This can cause a ground potential difference between the line being monitored and the AC input line (if they are on different AC sources). If possible power the BMI from the same power source that is being monitored If the AC input and AC line being monitored are different, DO NOT plug the monitored ground into the ground socket, plug it into the minus input socket for the channel which will be monitoring ground (channel 2 is normally the neutral to ground channel - plug monitored ground into the minus socket of channel 2) and leave the ground socket open. II. The individual leads tend to pick up noise, especially when monitoring DC voltages or if monitoring near a noise source (such as a CB panel). One way to eliminate the extraneous noise is to twist the pair of monitoring leads together fairly tightly. A better method of eliminating extraneous noise in the leads is to make a pair of leads from a piece of twisted pair, shielded I/O cable. Use a twisted pair for monitoring and connect the shield to frame ground. III. If you need thermal paper for the 4800 in an emergency situation, you can purchase small rolls from Radio Shack: CAT NO. 26-1332 for printer TP-10 The paper is 1/8" narrower than the paper from BMI, but will work. Flaherty Fm: Sally Brown Sj: DOUBLE CHECK YOUR SOFTWARE SUPPORT TOOLS (AKA "A SUGGESTION") There are a couple of things that can be done to better prepare your service reps: 1. Order SPx and GPx SSN tapes so that down customer situations do not occur as a result of not being able to install an SSN. These can be ordered by the Customer Service Manager via OMS, from Cay Williams and must be assigned (employee #) to an FE or yourself if you want one in the office for backup purposes. 2. Order, or obtain from the previous Systems Department's inventory, various OS level tapes to adequately support your installed base (e.g., 7.2R*13, 7.4B, 7.5B, 8.5E, 8.6G, 10.6G, etc.). Don't forget to order the appropriate media types also (1/2", 1/4") These can be ordered, via OMS, from Cay Williams. She will only be able to provide releases that are still in manufacturing so please don't order one of every release that ever existed. OS tapes can also be made at a customer site or at a sales branch. 3. 7.5B Diagnostics tapes were sent to each of you. Additional copies can be made locally or can also be ordered from Cay Williams. You will be charged media and shipping charges for all items ordered through Cay. Please inventory what "tools" you have and make it a priority to obtain those you don't have. It will save $$ and prevent an unhappy customer situatio due to poor responsiveness down the road. Monitor mode is invoked as follows: 1. Place the terminal in block mode (or loopback transmit to receive) 4309/10/12/13 - FUNCT + A; 4314 - FUNCT + 6 2. press and release: ESC then V (upper case V) 3. 4313, 4314, & 4315 terminals will display Mn on the status line, 4309/10/12 terminals do not show Mn. Some prom levels of 4313, 4314, 4315 terminals will enter monitor mode by pressing FUNC and T (Mn displayed on status line) The data stream will appear horizontally across the screen and the screen will scroll as it fills. Printable ASCII characters will be displayed normally, control characters will be displayed as two small stacked characters (occupies one character position) which are the abbreviation for the control character. Either transmit or receive data can be monitored. On the 4314 and 4315 terminals which have two interfaces, you can see both transmit and receive data by switching windows (or set the terminal for two windows on the screen). A patch cable (multi-connector cable works) will be required to connect the device's receive/transmit data pin (3/2) to the monitoring terminal's receive data pin (pin 3). A breakout box, small jumper lead, and component lead/paper clip will work for 4309/10/12/13/14 terminals; the 4315 terminal which uses a modular.RJ45 connector requires a modular cable to connect into its receive data pin (pin 3). The following drawing shows the pins on the 4315 modular RJ45 connector: RJ-45 Female Plug Front View (Looking at the back of a DT-4315) -------------------------------------- | ----------- | | | | | | ---- ---- | | | | | | | | | | ----- ----- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] | | | ---|---------------|-----|--- | -------|---------------|-----|-------- | | | | R | PIN 8 x PIN 1 D T A TOOLS & TEST EQUIP.-ALL-BASIC FOUR------------------FIB004 Pg001 The following ASCII control code and ASCII character tables are included for reference: ASCII CONTROL CODES HEX ASCII BINARY DESCRIPTION (ASCII) --- ----- ---------- ---------------------------------------------- . 00 NL 0000 0000 Null Character (used for padding) 01 SH 0000 0001 Start of Header (Begin Session) 02 SX 0000 0010 Start Of Text (Begin Data Block) 03 EX 0000 0011 End Of Text (End Data Block) 04 ET 0000 0100 End Of Transmission 05 EQ 0000 0101 Enquire (bid for acknowledgement) 06 AK 0000 0110 Acknowledge (Positive Responce) 07 BL 0000 0111 Bell (ring the bell) 08 BS 0000 1000 Back Space 09 HT 0000 1001 Horizontal Tab 0A LF 0000 1010 Line Feed 0B VT 0000 1011 Vertical Tab 0C FF 0000 1100 Form Feed 0D CR 0000 1101 Carriage Return 0E SO 0000 1110 Shift Out (subscripting) 0F SI 0000 1111 Shift In (superscripting) 10 DL 0001 0000 Data Link Escape (binary transmission) 11 D1 0001 0001 Device Control #1 (X-ON) 12 D2 0001 0010 Device Control #2 13 D3 0001 0011 Device Control #3 (X-OFF) 14 D4 0001 0100 Device Control #4 15 NK 0001 0101 Negative Acknowledge 16 SY 0001 0110 Synchronous Idle (Sync character) 17 EB 0001 0111 End of Transmission Block 18 CN 0001 1000 Cancel 19 EM 0001 1001 End of Medium 1A SB 0001 1010 Substitute Character 1B EC 0001 1011 Escape 1C FS 0001 1100 Field Separator (Motor Bar I) 1D GS 0001 1101 Group Separator (Motor Bar II) 1E RS 0001 1110 Record Separator (Motor Bar III) 1F US 0001 1111 Unit Separator (Motor Bar IV) (continued on next page) TOOLS & TEST EQUIP.-ALL-BASIC FOUR------------------FIB004 Pg002 ASCII CODE CHART l l l s s s HEX BINARY b ASCII HEX BINARY b ASCII HEX BINARY b ASCII --- --------- ----- --- --------- ----- --- --------- ----- 00 0000 0000 NUL 2B 0010 1011 + 56 0101 0110 V 01 0000 0001 SOH 2C 0010 1100 , 57 0101 0111 W 02 0000 0010 STX 2D 0010 1101 - 58 0101 1000 X 03 0000 0011 ETX 2E 0010 1110 . 59 0101 1001 Y 04 0000 0100 EOT 2F 0010 1111 / 5A 0101 1010 Z 05 0000 0101 ENQ 30 0011 0000 0 5B 0101 1011 [ 06 0000 0110 ACK 31 0011 0001 1 5C 0101 1100 \ 07 0000 0111 BEL 32 0011 0010 2 5D 0101 1101 ] 08 0000 1000 BS 33 0011 0011 3 5E 0101 1110 ^ 09 0000 1001 HT 34 0011 0100 4 5F 0101 1111 _ 0A 0000 1010 LF 35 0011 0101 5 60 0110 0000 ` 0B 0000 1011 VT 36 0011 0110 6 61 0110 0001 a 0C 0000 1100 FF 37 0011 0111 7 62 0110 0010 b 0D 0000 1101 CR 38 0011 1000 8 63 0110 0011 c 0E 0000 1110 SO 39 0011 1001 9 64 0110 0100 d 0F 0000 1111 SI 3A 0011 1010 : 65 0110 0101 e 10 0001 0000 DLE 3B 0011 1011 ; 66 0110 0110 f 11 0001 0001 DC1 3C 0011 1100 < 67 0110 0111 g 12 0001 0010 DC2 3D 0011 1101 = 68 0110 1000 h 13 0001 0011 DC3 3E 0011 1110 > 69 0110 1001 i 14 0001 0100 DC4 3F 0011 1111 ? 6A 0110 1010 j 15 0001 0101 NAK 40 0100 0000 @ 6B 0110 1011 k 16 0001 0110 SYN 41 0100 0001 A 6C 0110 1100 l 17 0001 0111 ETB 42 0100 0010 B 6D 0110 1101 m 18 0001 1000 CAN 43 0100 0011 C 6E 0110 1110 n 19 0001 1001 EM 44 0100 0100 D 6F 0110 1111 o 1A 0001 1010 SUB 45 0100 0101 E 70 0111 0000 p 1B 0001 1011 ESC 46 0100 0110 F 71 0111 0001 q 1C 0001 1100 FS 47 0100 0111 G 72 0111 0010 r 1D 0001 1101 GS 48 0100 1000 H 73 0111 0011 s 1E 0001 1110 RS 49 0100 1001 I 74 0111 0100 t 1F 0001 1111 US 4A 0100 1010 J 75 0111 0101 u 20 0010 0000 SP 4B 0100 1011 K 76 0111 0110 v 21 0010 0001 ! 4C 0100 1100 L 77 0111 0111 w 22 0010 0010 " 4D 0100 1101 M 78 0111 1000 x 23 0010 0011 # 4E 0100 1110 N 79 0111 1001 y 24 0010 0100 $ 4F 0100 1111 O 7A 0111 1010 z 25 0010 0101 % 50 0101 0000 P 7B 0111 1011 { 26 0010 0110 & 51 0101 0001 Q 7C 0110 1100 | 27 0010 0111 ' 52 0101 0010 R 7D 0111 1101 } 28 0010 1000 ( 53 0101 0011 S 7E 0111 1110 ~ 29 0010 1001 ) 54 0101 0100 T 7F 0111 1111 DEL 2A 0010 1010 * 55 0101 0101 U NOTE: Data is transmitted lsb (Least Significant Bit) first.
