The modem will either not dial at all or it will drop the phone line once it has connected to the remote system. CAUSE: There are two reasons for these problems: 1. If PC-LINK detects DATA CARRIER after it has sent its hang up sequence, it will not dial. 2. If the modem does not detect DATA CARRIER within 'x' number of seconds after the modem connection, it will drop the line. SOLUTION: Change your data carrier modem settings. Get into PC-LINK Terminal Emulation and execute the following Hayes commands at the OK prompt. o AT&C1 - This will track the presence of data carrier. o ATS7=40 - This will set the wait time for carrier/dial tone to 40 seconds. o AT&W - This will save the settings above. o AT&V - This will display your saved modem settings. Troubleshooting guide 2. Key Disk approach 3. Special notes 4. Compatibility report 5. Compatible Machines List 6. Error Messages in alphabetical order (for both SuperLock and PC-LINK) PC-LINK is protected by a program called SuperLock. Many of the problems encountered in PC-LINK (particularly during installation) actually are errors in SuperLock. The majority of this FIB covers SuperLock troubleshooting and errors. ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE It is crucial to get answers to the following three questions first: WHAT IS THE ERROR MESSAGE AND ERROR NUMBER? DID THE ERROR OCCUR DURING INSTALL OR DURING EXECUTION? WHAT EQUIPMENT IS BEING USED? 1. Check general procedure: A. Be sure user has entered the drive letters correctly, is not using DOS drive ASSIGN, does not have write protect tabs on the disks being used for install, and has the correct disk in the drive. B. CHECK THE DOS ENVIRONMENT. Check the contents of CONFIG.SYS. BUFFERS=, DEVICE=, and FILES= use up memory but may be required for program operation. Check the contents of AUTOEXEC.BAT. Some RAM resident programs and/or the order in which they are executed can interfere with INSTALL and execution of the protected program and reduce the amount of memory available. To free up memory and eliminate potential incompatibilities, rename the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, reboot and retry. Report suspected incompatibilities to technical support. 2. CHECK THE MACHINE AND DRIVE: A. RETRY AT A LOWER SPEED. If the CPU clock speed can be varied, try at a lower clock speed. The method for changing clock speed will vary from system to system. B . RETRY ON A DIFFERENT DRIVE OR COMPUTER. If the same error occurs on a different machine or drive, the disk may be defective and should be replaced. If the same disk installs sucessfully on a different drive or machine, the machine may be incompatible or have a faulty disk drive. Contact technical support if incompatibility is suspected. Attempt the "Key Disk Approach" to get the user running while researching incompatibilities. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB016 Pg001 3. MAKE SURE THE DISTRIBUTION DISK IS NOT DAMAGED AND IS PROTECTED. A. RUN CHKDSK and note the number of hidden files. The number will vary depending on what combination of installation options were used when the program was protected. If there are no hidden files, the disk is not a SuperLock protected disk. B. RUN DISKCOPY. I/O errors occurring on normal tracks can be detected by doing a DISKCOPY of the suspect diskette. If an "Unrecoverable read error" occurs on any track or side other than the one specified for protection in MasterMaker (the default is track 16 side 0), replace the distribution disk. The protected track will be on side 1 track 0 of an installed floppy working copy. Some disk drives can not accurately read disks created on other drives. The inner most tracks of a disk are the hardest for these unreliable drives to read accurately. If DISKCOPY reports errors (except for the protected track), retry on a different drive. If the second drive reports the protected track and no other errors, the first drive should be serviced. If no "Unrecoverable read errors" are displayed by DISKCOPY, the disk is not a SuperLock protected disk. 4. FOR ERRORS THAT OCCUR DURING EXECUTION Check the PATH statement. See "LOAD FAILED xxxx = 12 " on how to call a program from the command line with some versions of MS-DOS and the use of subdirectories with floppy working copies. Run CHKDSK /F answering "N" to the message, "Convert lost clusters to files Y/N". SuperLock files can be recovered in this way and the program successfully executed. Make sure the protected program is being executed in a DOS environment. SuperLock is a single user copy protection system. It was not designed for use in network environments. 5. FOR ERRORS THAT OCCUR DURING INSTALL: A. HARD DISK: Make sure the partition being installed to is at least 2.5 MB. See "Compatibility Report" regarding Tall Grass "Duplicate Directory". B. FLOPPY DISK: Retry using reformatted, blank disk and/or disk formatted under IBM PC DOS for target disk. Use this technique to resolve the 6000-type errors. If drive A to drive B installation fails, reformat the target disk and retry from drive A to drive A (or B to B). 6. FOR ERRORS THAT OCCUR DURING UNINSTALL: A. GENERAL: Make sure the same distribution disk that was used to make the working copy is used for uninstall. If uninstall fails, retry from the same drives that were used for install. Make sure the protected program still executes. If it does not, the error message may help determine why uninstall is failing. If it does execute, the source of failure is probably the distribution disk. See "UNINSTALL TERMINATED xxxx = 9062". B. HARD DISK: Run CHKDSK /F answering "N" to the message "Convert lost clusters to files Y/N". SuperLock files can be recovered and the product successfully uninstalled in many cases. C. FLOPPY DISK: During UNinstall, make sure there is at least 9K of free space on a floppy working copy disk. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB016 Pg002 ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** KEY DISK APPROACH The "key disk" approach refers to the situation which requires that the distribution disk or a floppy disk working copy be in drive A: whenever the protected program is executed. This approach provides a temporary solution for the user whose machine or hard disk appears incompatible. 1. COPY UNPROTECTED FILES TO THE HARD DISK: Normally, this can be done with the DOS COPY command. The protected program file is normally marked "hidden" so that COPY will not attempt to copy it. If the protected program is not hidden and an attempt is made to copy this file, an I/O error will result. This does not hurt anything. The protected program file (whether hidden or not) must remain on the floppy diskette. 2. TO EXECUTE THE PROTECTED PROGRAM: The user should log onto the hard disk and desired subdirectory. When the protected filename is entered, SuperLock will automatically look at drive A: to load the protected program. After the program is loaded, all subsequent activity may fully utilize the hard disk. The floppy diskette may be removed from drive A: if desired. 3. CAUTION: PROTECTED PROGRAMS THAT REFERENCE THE PROTECTED FILE AFTER IT HAS BEEN LOADED INTO MEMORY. These include programs which have overlays in the protected EXE or COM file. In order for these programs to use the "key disk" approach, part of the protected program must be transferred to the hard disk. ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** SPECIAL NOTES BACKUP AND RESTORE Uninstall SuperLock protected programs before reformatting or changing hard disks. No special steps need to be taken when using the DOS BACKUP and RESTORE utilities if the hard disk is not to be reformatted after the BACKUP and before the RESTORE and if RESTORE is done to the same hard disk. No special steps need ever be taken when using BACKUP. No special steps need be taken when restoring individual data files or subdirectories. Use the /P option of RESTORE when restoring the root directory. DRIVE ASSIGNS Logical drives or assigns can not be used when installing a SuperLock protected program. ONE DRIVE SYSTEMS To install a floppy disk working copy on a one drive system, users should enter drive A: for both the Product and Target drives. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB016 Pg003 PATHING AND SUBDIRECTORY SUPPORT Most programs protected with the SuperLock system can be executed from other subdirectories if the installed directory is in the PATH statement. Protected programs with .EXE filename extensions that have been installed into a subdirectory can be executed from the root directory under IBM DOS 2.0 or 2.1. DOS 3.0 will try to execute the hidden file in the root directory and fail because the protected file is encrypted. When the SuperLock system is applied to Plinked programs, the protected program is not hidden and it is placed in the current subdirectory. SuperLock will search all subdirectories in the user's PATH statement until it finds the protected program to be executed. REMOVING .COM FILES LEFT AFTER UNINSTALL If the user runs uninstall from a directory other than the one in which the program was installed, this read only file will be left behind and the user will not be able to erase it or remove the subdirectory. The user may re-install over it and then uninstall it off. Or, use the DOS 3.0 ATTRIB utility to change its attribute to archive (normal) and then erase it. If the loader has been deleted or can't be found, the protected program can still be uninstalled provided no other SuperLock support files have been deleted. HIGH DENSITY DISKETTES AND DISK DRIVES SuperLock protected programs can be installed from or to IBM AT and AT clone high density (5 1/4", 1.2M or 3 1/2", 1.44M) disk drives as long as the floppies are NOT formatted for the higher density (1.2M or 1.44M). ***************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************** COMPATIBILITY REPORT COMPATIBLE MACHINES - The "COMPATIBLE MACHINES" list printed at the end of this section, represents machines that have been known to work with earlier versions of SuperLock as well as the current 3.0.2 release. Notes have been added to indicate details on limitations and special circumstances. COMPATIBLE HARD DISKS - Ver. 3.0.0 and later versions of SuperLock will work on any hard disk except those formatted under the Novell Network operating system. The hard disk must be at least 2.5 megabytes in size (this is the minimum size for a pertition). If DOS can be directly booted from the hard disk, there should be no compatibility problem. It is possible to find one manufacturer's hard disk formatted in several ways. Some format options have been known to cause install and execution to fail with SuperLock versions prior to 3.0.2. If the protected product will not operate properly or not install on a particular hard disk, the user may still use the hard disk with the "Key Disk" approach (see KEY DISK APPROACH section). Tall Grass Hard Disks - "Duplicate Directory" is an option of the FORMAT utility of the Tall Grass hard disk system. A hard disk formatted with this option may display "Hard Disk Incompatible 0107" during INSTALL. One way to tell if option was used is to reboot the hard disk. The FORMAT options are SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB016 Pg004 displayed at load time. Refer to the manufacturer's reference material for information on removing the "Duplicate Directory" option before a SuperLock protected program can be sucessfully installed. Compaq MS DOS 3.31 HARD DISK FORMAT - SuperLock version 3.0.2 supports the 386 MS-DOS 3.31 large disk format. Earlier versions of SuperLock fail with the error "INSTALL TERMINATED 0102". MISCELLANEOUS SOFTWARE AND HARD DEVICES - Concurrent PC DOS - SuperLock does not operate under the Concurrent PC DOS system from Digital Research Inc. DISK OPTIMIZERS - Will not affect installed SuperLock protected programs as long as they do not "optimize" or sort hidden subdirectories and files. SuperLock has been successfully tested with Soft Logic Solution's Disk Optimizer and Peter Norton's optimize utility. NETWORKS - SuperLock was designed for use on single user systems. SuperLock protected programs can be accessed by all workstations with version (7/22/85) of the 3 COM System. Protected programs can be executed from the file server only under PC Network only when the server is a bootable hard disk. Hard disks that boot from a floppy disk will not work with the SuperLock system. Protected programs can be executed on a Novell System with the "Key Disk Approach". MEMORY RESIDENT UTILITIES - SuperLock has been sucessfully tested with SIDEKICK and LIGHTNING and is currently in use with many memory resident utilities. Some combinations and the order in which programs are loaded can cause problems. See the "Trouble Shooting Guide" section. DISK CACHING - Software that "caches" or stores floppy disk I/O until the computer has time to process it may interfere with install and uninstall. See the "Trouble Shooting Guide" section. SuperLock protected programs execute under I.T.T.'s disk cache system but may not always UNinstall with disk cache on. DOS SHELL UTILITIES - Some versions of DOS shell utilities like Dpath and 1DIR can interfere with install, uninstall and execution. See the "Trouble Shooting Guide" section. ACCELERATOR BOARDS - Once installed on a hard disk, SuperLock protected programs van be loaded at speeds as great as 16 MHZ. Errors that occur during install and uninstall can be avoided by "switching" the device into a lower speed. See the "Trouble Shooting Guide" section for details. All versions of SuperLock execute at any speed after installation to a hard disk. HIGH SPEED CRYSTALS - High speed crystals are devices that are usually purchased seperately and installed by the end user or his dealer. Modifying the IBM AT in this manner invalidates the computer's warranty. AT's equipped with these devices run faster, but may experience intermittant failures. The original IBM AT came with a 12 MHz crystal and had a clock speed of 6 MHz. Add-on high speed crystals have been known to go as high as 10 MHz clock speed. Programs protected with SuperLock 2.0.2B and later will execute on AT's. with 16 MHz crystal (8 MHz clock). Versions prior to 2.0.2B would execute only. if the distribution disk had never been installed on an AT with a high speed crystal. See the "Trouble Shooting Guide" section for details. MODEMS, GRAPHICS CARDS, SPECIAL MONITORS ETC. - Have no affect on the operation of SuperLock protected programs. PLEASE, do not order a replacement copy unless your customer is experiencing one of the problems listed below. Please refer to the PC-LINK Marketing Announcement (#467 I, 07/17/89) for the market codes. The following are the enhancements to PC-LINK 3.0*22: 1. PC-LINK now contains ISP protocol as an option in the printer configuration menu. ISP protocol allows slave printing from a GPx system. In addition, ISP protocol can improve the performance of slave printing on SPx and MPx systems. The operating system level of the SPx system must be 7.4B or . higher and the MPx systems must be m.6G or higher. When configuring the MPx port (TERM.CONFIG) the slave printer type selected must be ISP. The other option in the PC-LINK printer configuration menu is BFIS. It is used when the printer attached to the PC is a serial printer and has BFIS (Basic Four Industry Standard) protocol. 2. PC-LINK now contains a new option for character set in the PC-LINK printer configuration menu. When configuring the printer the user can choose ISO or MS-DOS as the valid character set for slave printing. 3. When the type of printer selected is Serial in the PC-LINK configuration menu, the type of protocol may now be selected. The protocol types that may be selected are: None, Xon/Xoff, DTR or Both (Xon/Xoff and DTR). The protocol PC-LINK uses, can now be matched to the specific printer. 4. A new Host System Type has been added to the configuration menu. The system type is GPx and is used when the Host is a GPx Series 40/70. 5. A new Terminal Type has been added to the configuration menu. The terminal type is 4313. This allows for full graphic capability for Presentation Services and other software modules. 6. PC-LINK is now supported on MS-DOS Version 2.1 or higher. PC-LINK 3.0*22 corrects the following problems: 1. Slave printing periodically loses characters and linefeeds are not consistent causing lines to overprint. 2. The PC screen is corrupted by "SB' and 'CF' mnemonics. 3. The RECV Spoolfilter option did not work on all host system types. Hex codes are displayed in the PC file and/or linefeeds are not recognized. 4. When sending data from a PC to the host system and the data is delimited by quotations, the quotations are written in to the host data file. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB021 Pg001 5. When receiving data from a host system to the PC in DBASE format and the . data is delimited by quotations, the quotations are not removed prior to transferring the data to the DBASE file. 6. A PC will not receive files from 13xx or MPx systems with lowercase names. 7. Control-N and Control-O allows a user to toggle in and out of the extended . or graphics character set. PC-LINK 3.0*22 contains the following known problems: 1. When receiving data from a host system to the PC in worksheet (Lotus) format, the file appears to transfer over but when the spreadsheet is loaded, the file on the PC is empty or records are missing. This occurs most often when there are more than 255 records in the host file. WORKAROUND: Transfer 255 records at a time then "combine" the spreadsheets. 2. When sending data from the PC in plain format and the fields are separated by comas, the fields are not recognized in the host system file. WORKAROUND: Modify the following line of code in the SEND program: GPx/SPX: 315 LET P=POS("," = B$);IF P <> 0 LET B$(P, 1) = $0A$;GOTO 315 MPx/13xx: 315 LET P=POS("," = B$);IF P <> 0 LET B$(P, 1) = $8A$;GOTO 315 3. When sending a plain file from a PC to a direct file on an MPx host system and the file already exists, the following error message is received, "The calculated key size is greater than the defined key size". WORKAROUND: If the file is erased on the MPx system and the defined key . size is correct, the file will transfer successfully. 4. If using a receive procedure within the "HSTCTL" program on the host and the file already exists on the PC, an error 0411 is displayed on the PC screen. The error message, "File already exists" is also displayed. WORKAROUND: Erase or rename the file on the PC prior to running the receive procedure from the HSTCTL program. 5. When sending a file from the PC to an MPx host system and the host file type is specified as string, one of two error messages are displayed. If the file already exists on the MPx, the message, "Existing host file type does not match type specified - Press [Esc] to continue" is displayed. If the file does not exist on the MPx, the message, "Error creating host file - Press [Esc] to continue" is displayed. WORKAROUND: The MPx system does not support string files, select another file type in the send procedure. 6. When sending to direct files, the key length is not correct. WORKAROUND: Modify the following lines of code in the SEND program: GPx/SPx: 1011 IF LEN(B$) > 0 LET K$ = B$(1, POS($0A$ = B$) - 1) 1040 LET B$ = B$(LEN(K$) + 2) MPx/13xx: 1011 IF LEN(B$) > 0 LET K$ = B$(1, POS($8A$ = B$) - 1) 1040 LET B$ = B$(LEN(K$) + 2) 7. When sending to a serial or string file, no field separators must be used. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB021 Pg002 WORKAROUND: Modify the following line of code in the SEND program: GPx/SPx: 3020 WRITE RECORD(3, END = 5290, ERR = 5320)B$(2) MPx/13xx 3010 WRITE RECORD(3, END = 5290, ERR = 5320)B$(2) 8. When receiving data to the PC in worksheet format and specifying fields, the error message, "Error writing file. Transmission ended - Press [Esc] to continue" is displayed. This occurs when there is a break in the field . selected for transfer (ie. fields 1, 2 and 5 only). WORKAROUND: Select all fields in the range desired (ie. fields 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) or select the entire file. Once the spreadsheet is created on the PC, Lotus can be used to delete 'columns'. ORIGINATOR: Chuck Zimmerman SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB022 Pg002 FIB 00023 MAI COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL 08/24/95 *** PC-LINK 3.0 Helpful Hints [WPSF 810] *** The purpose of this field bulletin is to make it easier to install, support and use PC-Link 3.0 across all supported MAI hardware platforms and operating system levels. This field bulletin discusses the installation and removal of PC_Link on the PC, creating user logins on the host system, installation of the host files and easy solutions to common problems. A. PC-LINK is no loger copy protected. As of the 3.0*22 release of PC-Link, copy protection was removed from the product. As higher versions of MS/DOS were released (MS/DOS 5.0), it was discovered the copy protection software was not compatible and PC-Link was unable to be installed. As a result, the procedures to install and uninstall the software have been changed. B. Uninstalling a copy protected version. If PC-Link is copy protected, the executable file is flagged as read only. This file must be removed before installing a uncopy protected version of PC-Link into the same directory. Enter the following MS/DOS commands: 1. CD \PCLINK Note: \PCLINK is only shown as an example only. The 2. ATTRIB -R PCLINK. actual directory name may be different. ATTRIB 3. ERASE PCLINK.* is and MS/DOS operating system command. C. Installing PC-Link "uncopy protected". The uncopy protected version of PC-Link is sent out on two 5 1/4" diskettes and one 3 1/2" diskette. It is no longer necessary to specify which media type is needed when ordering. Enter the commands below to install PC-Link to the hard disk of the PC: 1. CD \PCLINK Note: If you are using the 5 1/4" diskettes enter the 2. COPY A:*.* second command once for each diskette. D. Creating user logins for file transfer. In order to transfer data to and from the PC, the PC-Link manual gives a few "rules" that must be followed to have a successful transfer. One of the rules that is broken most often is the user/port is not in console mode (basic) or they are currently in terminal emulation running a basic program. In either case, this causes the file transfer procedure to abort and the message, "ACK not received from host", is displayed. Listed below are four suggestions that if followed provide for easier file transfer, both to and from the host system. 1. Create a unique user login id that when the user logs onto the host system "basic" is executed immediately and leaves the user in command mode. When "basic" is executed, no basic program should be loaded or run. After the user logs onto the host system the basic ready prompt should be displayed. 2. If large data files are going to be transferred, set the start size (number of pages) to be large. The number assigned is dependant on SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg001 the host system the PC is connected to. 3. It is highly suggested the user's assigned home directory/node be the same directory/node where the data files reside on the host. If data files are in more than one directory/node on the host, use the one that contains the data files transferred most often. The reason for assigning the data file directory/node as the user's home area, is that it eliminates having to specify where the file resides on the hard disk of the host system during a file transfer. When configuring PC-Link, the Data Path and Program Path in Host Defaults are left blank when the user's home directory contains the files. After logging in the host system, the function key, F-10 is pressed and the PC-Link system menu is redisplayed. The host programs can be transferred to the host system at this point. E. Installing the Host Program Files. The most common problem that occurs when installing the program files onto the host system is the answer given to the question: Do not create program on MBF - has been manually created (No/Yes) ? The answer to this question is always "NO" when installing PC-Link for the first time or into a directory/node that does not currently contain a copy of the host file programs. If an incorrect answer is given, the file will not transfer over to the host system and the PC will hang. F. Removing the Direct File Security System PC-Link provides a security program called SAFE which provides DIRECT data files from unauthorized access. It does not provide any type of security for SERIAL, SORT, INDEXED or STRING files. Chapter 7 of the PC-Link User Guide, provides information on using the Direct File Security System. To remove the Direct File Security System for receive procedures, modify the appropriate RECV host program as follows: LOAD "RECV" 303 REM GOSUB 8010 SAVE To remove the Direct File Security System for send procedures, modify the appropriate SEND host program as follows: LOAD "SEND" DELETE 7010,7100 SAVE G. Changing the "," delimiter for SEND and RECV procedures. The comma character is used by PC-Link as a field delimiter during both a SEND and RECV procedure. When a RECV procedure is performed, the field separator in the data record is converted into a comma on the PC. When a SEND procedure is performed, commas are converted into field separators in the host data file record. Problems will be encountered when commas are included within data fields. To correct this problem, a different delimiter must be used and the SEND and RECV programs modified. Assume the PC file has the following format: SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg002 Field 1|Field 2|Field 3|etc Load SEND host program and make the following change: Host system types: BOSS/VS and 13xx 316 P = POS("|" = B$); IF P <> 0 THEN B$(P, 1) = $8A$; GOTO 316 SAVE Host system types: BOSS/IX and GPx 316 P = POS("|" = B$); IF P <> 0 THEN B$(P, 1) = $0A$; GOTO 316 SAVE Load the RECV host program and make the following change: Host system types: BOSS/VS and 13xx 7040 IF G$ = $8A$ THEN LET A$(P1, 1) = "|"; GOTO 7098 SAVE Host system types: BOSS/IX and GPx 7040 IF G$ = $0A$ THEN LET A$(P1, 1) = "|"; GOTO 7098 SAVE NOTE: In both program changes above, the character, "|", can be substitued with any other character as the desired field separator. When receiving that you want to change the delimiter in, do: In PCLink, choose Receive, select Criteria, select Keys, select Include. H. Common problems and their solutions. 1. PC "hangs" when the send or receive procedure is started. If the PC hangs and the keyboard is locked up after selecting "Go" during a send or receive procedure, the host file program cannot be located on the hard disk of the host system. A few suggestions to correct this problem are: a. Where are the host file programs installed ? See Chapter 7 of the "PC-Link User Guide" (M6340) for more information. b. If the host programs were installed, were they installed into the directory or node specified in the Program Path under the PC-Link configuration menu (see Host Defaults). c. Were the correct host program files installed onto the hard disk of the host computer ? See Chapter 7 of the PC-Link User Guide" (M6340) for a list of the program files that correspond to each of the MAI hardware platforms. NOTE: If the operating system of the host computer is UNIX, the version of PC-Link must be 3.0*22. The host program files to be installed are SENDGPX, SAFEGPX and RECVGPX. d. When the host program files were installed, was the Caps Lock key turned on the PC keyboard ? It is recommended that the host program files be installed using all UPPERCASE characters. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg003 e. If all of the previous four conditions have been checked, install the host files into your current working directory (or node) but remove any reference to a Program Path in the PC-Link configuration menu (see Host Defaults). 2. Transferring Lotus and Dbase files from/to the Host and PC. The current version of PC-Link (3.0*22) has problems sending and receiving data in Dbase and Lotus format on the PC. When sending data,. the error message "Retry limit exceeded is displayed" and the transfer is aborted. When receiving data, one of two things may occur: a. The file appears to transfer over to the PC but, the file is empty or records are missing. b. The error message, "Error in Writing File, Tranmission Ended" and the file transfer is aborted. Solution: Call the MAI National Support Center and request an earlier version of PC-Link. The 3.0*20 version transfers all file types correctly. 3. Turning off NUM-LOCK of the PC keyboard. After starting up PC-Link, NUM-LOCK cannot be disabled by pressing the . NUM-LOCK key on the PC keyboard. The NUM-LOCK key turns the numeric key pad on and off acting like a toggle switch. Solution: While holding the Shift key down, press the NUM-LOCK key. 4. Running PC-Link in a networking environment. Prior to PC-Link 3.0*22, PC-Link was copy protected and the software used for protection is not compatible in a network environment. The file security system in a network enviroment interferes with the copy protection software. If PC-Link is TRIED on a network, it must not have copy protection. THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES THAT PC-LINK WILL WORK ON A NETWORK AND IT IS NOT SUPPORTED. Solution: Order PC Lan Workplace for DOS. 5. Binary fields (data) in files - Retry Limit Exceeded. If a file on the host system or PC contains binary data, it cannot be used in a send or receive procedure. Binary data can be defined as any data that cannot be displayed directly to a terminal or monitor without going through some type of translation. On a host system, binary data is found in "compressed date fields" within data files. It can also be found in data files when the data input by a user is not verified. A user my also enter "garbage data" into data fields by pressing control characters, the escape key or any of the motor bar keys and it is accepted as valid data. Binary data files can come almost anywhere depending on how the data files was created. Chapter 7 of the PC-Link User Guide gives a few examples of the format expected for a receive procedure to transfer SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg004 the data successfully. If binary data is found in either the host or PC data files during a file transfer the message, "Retry Limit exceeded" is displayed and the file transfer is aborted. Solution: If the data files on the host system contains compressed date fields a program must be written to write the data to another file without compressed dates. If the data file contains any garbage data, the data must be removed. The MS/DOS command "TYPE" displays files on the PC. If the monitor beeps or garbage is displayed, the file contains binary data and cannot be used. A new file MUST be created. 6. Increasing and decreasing the timing factor. In the PC-Link configuration menu under the Communications sections is an option called Timing. The timing factor defines the speed of the data transfer. If the data transfer appears slow, the PC-Link manual says to increase the timing factor in the PC-Link configuration menu. If you want to INCREASE the timing factor the number in the PC-Link configuration menu must be LOWERED. The lower the number, the faster the timing. In most cases, the timing factor can be set a 20 for the best results (speed) when performing a data transfer. 7. The PC "hangs" when transferring the host program files. When transferring the host program data files to a host system, the PC hangs after the last line is displayed. A few suggestions to correct this problem are: a. If a data path is specified in the PC-Link configuration menu under Host Defaults, verify that the directory or node exists on the host system. See sections D and E in this document for more information When entering a Program path name into the PC-Link configuration menu, it MUST be fully qualified. If the host system type is GPx or BOSS/IX it must begin with a "/". For BOSS/VS systems, the family name should be specified (ex. (DISK0).NODENAME.). b. Verify that the user has permission or access rights to the node or directory where the host program files are to be installed. . For UNIX based systems, the directory where the host files are being installed should have file permissions of "drwxrwxrwx". This can be accomplished by using the "chmod 777" command on the directory. c. If the host files already exist on the host system and they are being re-installed, verify the user has write permission to the program on disk. For UNIX based systems, the program should have file permissions of "-rw-rw-rw-". This is accomplished by using the "chmod 666" command of the program files. 8. Retry Limit Exceeded during send procedures under PC-Link 3.0*20. If a file is being sent to a host system and any file type except Serial is slected as the host file type, the message "Retry Limit Exceeded" is SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg005 received. The file is created on the host system but does not contain any data records. To fix the problem, load the SEND program on the host system and make the following changes: Host System Types: BOSS/IX and GPx LOAD "SEND" 330 IF T=0 OR T=2 B$=A$(2,LEN(A$)-1) + $0A01$ ELSE B$=A$(2,LEN(A$) - 1 41O IF T=0 OR T=2 B$=A$(2,LEN(A$)-1) + $0A01$ ELSE B$=A$(2,LEN(A$) - 1 230 IF C$ = $01$ GOTO 200 SAVE Host System Types: BOSS/VS and 13xx LOAD "SEND" 330 IF T=0 OR T=2 B$=A$(2,LEN(A$)-1) + $8A81$ ELSE B$=A$(2,LEN(A$) - 1 410 IF T=0 OR T=2 B$=A$(2,LEN(A$)-1) + $8A81$ ELSE B$=A$(2,LEN(A$) - 1 230 IF C$ = $81$ GOTO 200 SAVE 9. Commas are not recognized during send procedures - under PC-Link 3.0*22 When sending data from the PC in plain format and the fields are separated by commas, field separators are not inserted into the host data file. To fix the problem, load the SEND program on the host system and make the following changes: Host system types: BOSS/IX and GPx LOAD "SEND" 315 LET P = POS("," = B$); IF P <> 0 LET B$(P, 1) = $0A$; GOTO 315 SAVE Host system types: BOSS/VS and 13xx LOAD "SEND" 315 LET P = POS("," = B$); IF P <> 0 LET B$(P, 1) = $OA$; GOTO 315 SAVE 10. BOSS/VS - "Calculated key size is greater than the defined key size". When sending a file from a PC to a direct file on a BOSS/VS host system and the file already exists, the following error message is received, "The calulated key size is greater than the defined key size". Solution: If the file is erase on the BOSS/VS system and the defined key size is correct, the file will transfer successfully. 11. Error 0411 with receiving files using the HSTCTL program. If a receive procedure is executed under the "HSTCTL" program on the host system and the file already exists on the PC, an error 0411 is displayed on the screen. The error message, "File already exists" is also displayed. Solution: Erase or rename the file on the PC prior to running the SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg006 receive procedure from the HSTCTL program. 12. BOSS/VS - Selecting the host file type as string when sending data. When sending a file to a BOSS/VS system and the host file type is specified as string, one of two error messages is displayed. If the host file already exists, the message, "Existing host file type does not match type specified = Press [Esc] to continue is displayed. If the host file does not exist, the message, "Error creating host file - Press [Esc] to continue" is displayed. Solution: The BOSS/VS does not support string files, select another file type in the send procedure. 13. Recieve in worksheet format - Error writing file. Transmission ended. When receiving data to the PC in worksheet format and specifying fields, the error message, "Error writing file. Transmission ended - Press [Esc] to continue: is displayed. This occurs when there is a break in the fields selected for transfer (ie., fields 1, 2 & 5 only). Solution: Select all the fields in the range desired (ie., fields 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) or select the entire file. Once the worksheet is created on the PC, Lotus can be used to delete 'columns'. 14. OpenBASIC host program file installation - ACK not received from host. When transferring the host program files under OpenBASIC the message, "Did not receive ACK from host (Received) - Press [Esc] to continue". Solution: Make the following changes to allow for file transfer: a. PC-Link configuration: The suggested version of PC-Link is 3.0*22 because of the printer and terminal drivers included in this release. The required options in the PC-Link configuration menu are as follows: Host Defaults - Host system type - GPx Terminal - Terminal type - 4313 Printer - Printer protocol - ISP b. OpenBASIC configuration: 1. When configuring the port that the PC is connected to under OpenBASIC (CONFIG) the terminal type MUST be the environment variable TERM. 2. If a slave printer is configured under OpenBASIC, the type of printer selected under "CONFIG" MUST be ISP. c. Users that run OpenBASIC applications via PC-Link, must have a user login that is different from those that login via terminals. The user's UNIX environment must be changed to allow for data file transfer. The changes are placed in the user's ".profile" file. The following lines should be appended to the .profile. SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB023 Pg007 TERM=pclink;export TERM stty intr Note: To enter an ESCAPE in vi, a Control-V must be pressed while in append or insert mode, prior to pressing the ESCAPE key. The characters, ^[, are displayed on the terminal screen. 15. When sending and receiving data, the record counter becomes a negative number after it reaches 32767. In addition, when sending data to the host system, when specifying the number of records in "Creation data", the number is negative if more than 32767 records are selected. Solution: None. This is a display problem only and has no real effect on the data file transfer capabilities. 16. Data file transfer using Multi-keyed files. Multi-keyed files should not be used in send and receive procedures. This file type is not supported under PC-Link. Solution: A basic program can be written that reads the multi-keyed file and writes the information to another data file that is one of the supported file types. See Chapter 7 of the PC-Link User Guide for information on the data file types that are supported for each system type. The 'timing' limit of 100 on previous versions is not sufficient. Version 3.0*22 allows you to increase the 'timing' (slow down data transfer) up to 1000. I don't have access to a Pentium PC, but one of our dealers did some testing and determined that timing=1000 works fine. The customer will have to experiment with the timing factor to find the optimum rate for their PC. ORIGINATOR: Marilynn Mengos SOFTWARE-BASIC FOUR-PC-LINK-------------------------FIB026 Pg001
