NOTE: There are many models of the floppies, some have switches rather than jumpers, but the labeling and functionality is very similar. *** General Information - MBF PANASONIC/SHUGART 5 1/4" FDD *** The PANASONIC 5 1/4" Floppy Disk Drives as used on MAI Basic Four Systems are based on the SHUGART design and manufactured by MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC of JAPAN. The same manufacturer model numbers used by SHUGART are used by PANASONIC, so it can be assumed that this information applies to both MATSUSHITA (PANASONIC) and SHUGART models 455 and 475 of similar build levels (indicated by 'dash' (-) numbers after the model. MAI Basic Four currently uses mostly the model 475, but has approved the model 455 for replacement purposes, so either could be encountered in the field. The model 455 is used in only one configuration (PC/XT 360kb), whereas the 475 is used as a 'High-Density' (PC/AT 1.2mb) drive as well as a 'Dual-Density' (96 TPI 720kb formatted-capacity) drive (Spx 2000/3000/4000). Only the drive configuration jumpers are changed to effect the capacity/speed/density changes, so there is a requirement to know how to recognize and/or reconfigure them to either mode of operation. Please see FIB 0002 for Jumper Configuration data. Information will be added to FIB 0002 for any addidtional 'dash' (-) numbers as it is determined. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE DIFFERENT JUMPERS FOR THE VARIOUS 'DASH' NUMBER PCBA'S. THE DIFFERENCES ARE VERY MINOR, BUT YOU MUST ENSURE THAT YOU USE THE SETTINGS FOR THE CORRECT 'DASH' NUMBER ASSEMBLY.
