The Point of Sale system is also known as The Power Retailer System. The printers are used to print sales receipts, two types of printers are offered, slip printers, and receipt/journal printers. The printers will interface to the terminal or workstation via a RS232 interface. They will interface to the cash drawers via a RJ11C connector. The printers are manufactured by Printer Products. Two Models are used: Model S-720 Receipt Printer Model S-610 Slip Printer. Two types of cash drawers are used, each with a different interface. The RS232 interface type drawer connects to the MBF terminal or MBF serial printer RS232 connector via a special "Y" cable. The RJ11C interface type drawer connects to the POS 40 column printer via a modular jack connector RJ11C (telephone type). The Cash Drawers are manufactured by APG/UMI. The MBF terminal used with the POS is DT 4313. It will required a special keycap kit for the keyboard. The workstation used is the DS-520 with special keytop label kit for the keyboard. The host systems used are: MAI 2000/3000, and MPx system. Optional MBF equipment used with the POS system: o Paradyne Modems: Standalone and PC Card, 1200 and 2400 baud. o Barcode Scanner. o PT-4217 80 Column Standard Serial Interface Printer. ***** NACS MACHINE TYPES AND FEATURE NUMBERS ***** NACS MBF MANUFACTURER MODEL DESCRIPTION ------ ---- ---------------------- ------------------- 4106 N/A Printer Products S-720 40 Column Receipt Printer 4107 N/A Printer Products S-610 40 Column Slip Printer 4105 NK001 APG Model Mark II Series Cash Drawer, RJ11C printer connection 4105 NK002 APG Model Mark II series Cash Drawer, RS232 terminal connection ***** SOFTWARE INFORMATION ***** The operating systems used with the POS system are: o BBPC POS Operating System for the DS-520. o BOSS/IX Level 7.2B or later for the MAI 2000 and 3000. Preventive Maintenance should be performed during service calls. Printers: PM is required every 6 months. PM consists of cleaning the printer mechanism using a vacuum cleaner and inspection of all mechanical parts. Cash Drawers: PM is required every 6 months. PM consists of lubricating the latch and striker plate, and slide assemblies with petroleum jelly. Installation: A regional Power Retailer installer from one of the REGIONAL SALES OFFICES will coordinate and implement the installation of each new Power Retailer account, until local branches and dealerships have been trained to install a POS system. NACS personnel should contact the regional installer before attempting installation. ***** AVAILABLE DOCUMENTATION ***** The following Vendor Service Manuals will be shipped with the printers: o S-720 Users Manual, P/N 27880 o S-600 Series Users Manual, P/N 276860 The following manuals are available from MBF, the first one contains information needed during the initial installation of the POS system: o M0085A POS Technical Reference Manual o M0082A POS Users Guide, Version 3.0 o M0084A POS Register Communications System User Guide, Version 3.0 o M0083A POS Training Manual (for operators). ***** AVAILABLE TRAINING ***** POS Training will be included in the 2000/3000/4000 class. ***** SPECIAL TOOLS ***** Puller for Keyboard Keycaps, P/N MM410200 POINT-OF-SALE-MAI BASIC FOUR-POS--------------------FIB001 Pg002 ***** SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES ***** None ***** SPARE PARTS INFORMATION ***** Spare parts strategy in the field is to replace complete printers and cash drawers at the customer site and forward the failing unit to a repair depot, local or Tustin. Mitchell POINT-OF-SALE-MAI BASIC FOUR-POS--------------------FIB003 Pg001 FIB 00004 06/19/89 *** Receipt Printer Jamming and Smudging *** *** This FIB refers to the Receipt Printer Model S-720, MM410010 *** 1. Smudging If the gap between print head and platen is too small for the thickness of the paper then it will cause smudging on the printout, and if it is too wide, it will result in poor print quality. The Repair Center adjusts this gap for 2 ply paper with second copy pressure sensitive. To Adjust: Loosen the two screws holding the head, with a feeler gauge, adjust the head to 0.5 mm +/- 0.05 (between 0.45mm and 0.55mm) or until the gap is right for the thickness of paper used by the customer. If 3 or 4 ply paper is used, increase the head gap by 0.05mm until the best result is obtained. REFERENCE: mm thousandth (approx) 1 = 40 .5 = 20 .1 = 4 .05 = 2 2. Jamming Remove the platen assembly and inspect the metal paper separator, which is located right on top of the platen assembly. If this piece of metal is bent down because something heavy was put on top of it during shipment or at customer site, not leaving enough clearance for the paper to go through, it will result in paper jamming. This is a soft metal, you can bend it with your finger easily. Inspect and straighten it out, keeping the metal piece in parallel with the plastic platen assembly. 3. If the printer has both smudging and jamming problem Refer to section 1 to fix the smudging problem first. This eliminates the possibility that the gap between print head and platen is too tight, which could also cause the paper jamming. Then refer to section 2 to fix the jamming problem if it still exit. 4. Paper type According to the specification of both vendor and MBF, the printing paper which should be used is white single part roll or two ply white/canary No Carbon Required (second copy pressure sensitive) paper roll. If more than two ply paper is used, the head gap MUST be re-adjusted and the print quality on the third and fourth copy are not guaranteed. Unplug connectors J3 and J5 from the controller PCBA and place the mechanism to one side. 6. On the underside of the printer mechanism locate the bottom edge of the paper guide plate. The paper guide plate is a curved metal plate located directly under the printer platen assembly. In some printers, the bracket supporting the printer mechanism may have to be removed to gain access to paper guide plate. 7. Run a thin bead of Permabond 200 adhesive along the bottom edge of the paper guide plate, center the grommet material and press it down firmly over the plate. Hold the material in place for 5 seconds and then wipe away any excess adhesive. DO NOT GET THE ADHESIVE ON YOUR SKIN. 8. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: Printer firmware fix for check validation operation has been completed as of 12/15/90, however the Paper-Out status still does not work like the original (S720) printer. The Printer reports 'bad status' after eight print operations (lines) have been completed with the paper past the paper- sensor, however the 'bad status' is then reset by the software command used to interrogate the printer as to the cause of the 'bad status'. This starts the cycle again, and allows printing 8 more lines without paper (etc. etc. etc.) FIX: None at this time, however the validation station sensor works now, and the printer may be used as long as the Customer will replace the roll of paper when the colored stripe appears near the end of the spool. The stripe is red, green, or blue, and appears on one or both edges of the paper. Most Cash Registers have a similar kind of paper on which a colored stripe indicates the end of the roll, so it will not be an unfamiliar arrangement. The manufacturer is still working on a fix for the Paper-Out status problem.
